29 JUN 04 DOG BITE

This is not a spectacular shot
In fact it's downright boring - two kids walking away from the beach with two dogs

And you can't even SEE the dogs for the tall grasses

This was an over-the-shoulder shot for me . . . .
Because I felt I needed the time documentation

One of their dogs bit me as we all walked the beach
Me, walking in one direction taking pictures of crab baskets and people
Them, rough-housing & playing with one dog (both on leashes) and walking in the opposite direction

I am not afraid of dogs . . . I don't believe I was showing fear . . . I wasn't even interacting with them
As we passed, the larger of the two dogs jumped up & bit me in the upper right thigh

I was sooooo stunned I didn't realize what was happening til I hit the ground

The kids were astonished as well & it took them a few seconds to reel the dog in

They were apologetic, and, long story short, I met with their parents and the incident has been addressed
The dog has to be quarantined for ten days, even tho its shots are up to date
(rabies is a virus and there is ALWAYS a chance a virus will survive a vaccination) so the dog must be isolated

I don't think anything will come of this

but THAT was my day . . . how was YOURS?
=P

Dog bites are no fun, hope you are OK and didn't need stiches etc.

Wow! Talk about a story behind the photo.... Guess you've survived the incident without problem.
John Buffin06-Jul-2004 02:37
Oh my...you win, you had the worst day.
Here I thought this was a snapshot of two lovers heading into the tall grass for a quickie, then I read the story. =(
Hope everything turns out ok.

Well, first of all, I am so sorry you got bitten! That is horrible! This is why people need to keep their dogs on leashes when they are out.

Anyway, before I read your description of the image, I thought that this looked like two young lovers sneaking away ... I like this shot, Pete. Hope your wound heals well.

Wow!! I'm always afraid of getting bitten by the many dogs that run around here not on a leash. "Oh, he's friendly," their idiot owners say. They have no control over the dogs either. I hope the bite wasn't too bad.
Anne Young01-Jul-2004 00:59
Oh my gosh, I hope you are okay!! What a scary experience that must have been :(
Guest 01-Jul-2004 00:52
I hope everything turns out good Pete, we cant afford to have you sick,
Guest 30-Jun-2004 22:44
ouch! hope you don't catch the virus, Pete, and how alert of you to snap a shot of these people!
Anna Yu30-Jun-2004 21:28
Sorry to hear about that, Pete. Not so good day. Hope it doesn't hurt too much and will heal soon. What kind of dog was it?
Stu30-Jun-2004 17:14
Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the canine. When I was bitten, I had to get a tetanus jag, and the dog was destroyed - I had no say in that, the police just took the poor animal away. Well done with the photo, though - they look as if they could use my new bed!

OMG - what a frightening experience! Kudos on maintaining your composure - I would still be freaking out!!! Love the crab basket shot though.. :)
Elizabeth Glass30-Jun-2004 10:43
Oh man, that's terrible! Glad you're okay. You did the right thing; I wonder if it was a first for the dog.

I like this picture by the way. I love the sunshine warmness of the picture and the way the boy is leading the girl out of the frame. Very nice. Especially for an over the shoulder shot!

Not as eventful as yours. :) I was bitten once while jogging by a Doberman. It's very scary.

I love that photo even without the dogs.
Guest 30-Jun-2004 08:32
Scary story, I hope you are ok
Linda Alstead30-Jun-2004 08:03
Oh Pete - what a completely miserable experience. I've never been bitten by a strange dog but I know it can put people off dogs for life. Horrible experience - hope today is better. BTW - Loved the other pic too.

A really disturbing experience. A pity, you have such a feeling with beaches!

Jeanne, I was going to say the same thing -- but I figured it would be to crass to say something like that at a time like this (or that you'd think I was a dirty old man). :) Also, I can double-empathize; my dog hates cameras and would just as soon attack anyone pointing one at her; and when I was bitten by a dog on a neighbor's farm when I was a kid, they had to kill the poor thing to find out if he had rabies, not just quarantine him. BTW, Pete ... nice, colorful shot, and hope you get a clean bill of health soon.

OMG, this is a horrible day. You take care of you over the next couple of weeks.
Karthik Raja30-Jun-2004 04:36

gary becker30-Jun-2004 03:23
HOLY CRAP !!! I hope everything turns out OK. I'm not just saying this - I love this picture.
Guest 30-Jun-2004 03:01
Wow, messed up day!! I must say without the commentary from you, I thought he was leading that little blondie in to the tall grass for some loving!!!
Karen Leaf30-Jun-2004 02:57
HOLY SMOKES! I hadn't seen this one before commenting on the other... I am flipping out, and I'm so glad it wasn't YOUR foor in the trap. Hope you're ok!!!
snootydog30-Jun-2004 02:56
I love your other photo -- its wonderful and the tones are spectacular. But this one disturbs me as well it should. Its no secret that I am a dog lover so I hate hearing stories of people getting bitten by one. This must have been so upsetting for you. Was the dog behaving viciously? I know that sounds like a strange question but not all dog bits are intended as aggressive or vicious. That doesn't make it any better for the person who got bit, but it helps to know.
Robin Reid30-Jun-2004 02:50
Pete ... thats no fun ... nuts. Hope you are okay.
And it is probably difficult, given the event, for you to see much great about this image, but I like it for its suggestiveness. You know, Troy Donohue and Sandra Dee sneaking off into the tall reeds to .....
Guest 30-Jun-2004 02:41
OMG Pete - I am glad you're OK!! I was only going to bitch about my day at the office, but that's nothing compared to a dog bite!
Guest 30-Jun-2004 02:39
Oh my Gosh!!! I am so sorry that you had such an experience... how awful! Hope everything heals up well and quickly. I'll say a little prayer for ya!
