28th June 2004 - pillow talk

I’m going to sound dead ‘old-fashioned’ again when I say that fabrics are not what they used to be. My Mum recently offered me some duvet covers that were at least 20 years old and looked barely worn yet the ones I bought to match our new bedroom three years ago are completely knackered.

We moved from the ‘master bedroom’ of the house (the ‘posh’ room with the en-suite bathroom but sadly no pole dancing pole….that’s a story for another day) to the back bedroom three years ago for a number of reasons:

1. We’ve got no-one overlooking us so in the winter we can leave our curtains open and lie in bed watching the moon and stars with the clouds scudding across them – wonderful.
2. It’s a bigger room
3. It’s quiet – we don’t hear the road or people passing by
4. It’s not the room I shared with my ex!!!

BTW our new room has no pole dancing pole either before you get ideas – mind you, it’s just as well really because DM might want to trade me in for Kate Moss after studying the White Stripes video for I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself long, hard and often!!! He has issued me with a warning that if I go away on business and she knocks on the door then he ‘might’ be tempted!

Before DM moved in, I gutted the room, knocked down some fitted cupboards, did a bit of rewiring (yep – me, all my own work) and redecorated in a really warm and exotic style. It’s orange, red, purple and yellow and there are saris for drapes as well as loads of gold crushed velvet and brass – the whole feel is very middle-eastern. It is just so sumptuous it’s not true. I love it. Lara you’d love it too!

But there is a problem. Orange was obviously fashionable three years ago and is no longer. I can’t find any duvet covers to replace the shoddy ones that have fallen to bits in three years, that come close to the colour scheme.

While I was on my annual shopping trip with Colin while DM was at Le Mans, I spotted these duvet covers and pillows in Next and thought well, they’re really too dark but nonetheless, they are gorgeous, have just the right middle-eastern feel and have loads of gold beads and embroidery. (Almost) perfect! I duly handed over my plastic and they came home with me.

When it came time to change the bedding the new stuff went on and it looked gorgeous. This morning, though, my bubble burst. DM said ‘I hate this new bedding’. ‘Why?’ I cried, thinking ‘what’s wrong with it, it looks fab and is nice quality cotton so feels good too’. He declared it is the most uncomfortable bedding he’s ever known because when you take off your clothes and sit on the bed you get beads digging into your skin, as you do when you lie down on the pillows. The bitter blow fell when he said ‘can’t we change it?’ No! It was really expensive!!!

So, we now have beautiful bedding that he doesn’t want to sleep in. Pah, pah, pah.

Oh yes very nice. I too have very expensive bed linens which I use everyday. However roll the comforter down, place pillows away when I go to bed. Sometimes I allow myself the luxury of just using them.

First of all, I love the patterns here.. love that exotic look in fabrics
Secondly... don't people go far and wide to PURCHASE things for the bedroom that are a bit sharp and cause a bit of "discomfort"?
or is that just me?
lol

We have bedding that has a corded stripe down the pillow. I was so sick of seeing Simon come downstairs in the morning with a red line down his face where he'd laid on them I decided to have them the right way up for daytime and the wrong way up for sleeping, as the underside was smooth! Just a suggestion...

Otherwise, tell DM not to be so grumpy, after all we women spend most of our time in discomfort to look good, so why can't he spend some time in discomfort so he looks good when he snuggles into bed?!

Come on guys, these sharp pointy things are on the pillows too... If anyone wants them, pleeeeeaaasseeee make an offer!

A bed should be for sleeping and snuggling up with your partner, not for sitting on!

I came home one day with a gorgeous silky bedspread (colour above) with a stitched spiral pattern (no beads or sticky outy bits) and Sab said 'oh it's really nice but won't it get dusty?'. He gets bad allergies, so is a issues. So, we've never used it because our bed isn't big enough and too low to the ground. Maybe we could do a swap - yours for mine? Add a few gold cushions and you have a veritable boudoir. Happy to send pics if you think it sounds like a possible replacement...

LOL...everyone's comments! This is a great picture. I say (since everyone is sharing thier opinons) get differnt pillows to sleep on. There is nothing sweeter then pillow talk and falling asleep~

Maybe one of those fakirs that sleep on a bed of nails might like it! I say stick it in the spare bedroom :-)

Lovely capture and bedding!
Who cares if it's uncomfortable...if it
looks good. hee :)

Maybe it should go on the bed in the master bedroom. Would still look lovely, but wouldn't mar the "master's" behind. ;)

Well Linda , i'm with you , i think its gorgeous even if it does leave patterns on your bum. Small sacrifice i say .

I like Gayle's simple solution . . or, maybe . . and I know this is very cutting edge, but work with me here . . .what about sitting on a CHAIR!!! It's an amazing new device and NO beads!!

These are SOOOO pretty! I would LOVE them, but have to agree that TR would HATE them! I have a thing for linens...Like them to have a 600 thread count, anything less makes me all poopy headed in the morning. I also like my sheets TUCKED in TIGHT and IRONED! TR, on the other hand, doesn't subscribe to my anal bedding practices and I inagine there will come a time when we have separate beds....:-( LOL!!

I mean, who's idea was it to sew sharp, pointy bits to bedding anyway? It's supposed to be soft... Duh!

Great story and terrific photo. I never would have guessed what this was. Love the color! Tell that man to pull back the covers before sitting on the bed :-)
