Reid 'oilfield' engine

This is a 1/8 scale Reid 'oilfield' engine, of the type frequently used in the oilfields of Pennsylvania. This kit is marketed by Burns and Hoerner from Pennsylvania and this engine was photographed at their display shown at NAMES 2004 where I purchased the castings. The original engine was a "hot tube" engine, which means that ignition was triggered by an external flame which ignited the cylinder mixture via a small hole into the cylinder near the open flame. Unlike the 'Flamelicker', actual ignition in this case takes place within the cylinder, the open flame acting only as an 'ignitor' much like the discharge of a spark plug. The 'hot tube' ignition can be a bit cantankerous, and would be especially so on a scaled down model like this. My guess is, it will be very difficult to duplicate the 'hot tube' ignition on this model.
