Waiting For Summer by John down under

Adelaide, Australia

This is the roof of my house with the ominous winter sky in the background. The rotary ventilator is waiting for summer again so that it can do its job of drawing hot air out of the roofspace to help keep the house temperature under control and give the air conditioner an easier time.

I like this blend of the rough, striated texture of the tiles with the repeating linear structure of the main tiles and the roof capping to contrast with the smooth, metallic texture of the rotary ventilator and the repeated circular structure of its fins, and with the further contrast of the formless texture and structure of the menacing sky in the background.

I posted this current version on 14 June to replace two earlier efforts (both posted on 14 June) in which I had processed the image to colourise the whole thing purple to see what people (including me) thought of that.

g'day JDU - based on your intention for this pic, I think this version is the best, and works in al the ways u verbalised. you explained well why the pic - compositionally it works really well, with the vent structure balanced by the strong leading diagonal line(s)and thier perspective. I think what grabs me about this one is the colour - it's so far from what my eyes would expect - on a roof, at dusk? thanks.

Yep, much better.

Hi John,

I think I prefer this one too. What's most interesting is the lighting... Your neighbors must have thought a storm was approaching with all the flash coming from your roof LOL

Yes, I think it works much better like this. It's a great shot actually.

Thanks for your comments guys. I decided against continuing with the colourised experiment in the end, so here it is in its more natural state.
Cheers, John

Hi John,
I like the idea here and also the composition of the image, but I think the dramatic contrast between the dark blue sky and the light tiles in the original image gets lost in this version.

Hi John, I like the shot but I'm not so sure about the color.
