Day 37

I felt ten feet tall this morning.

This is my first ever lightning shot. I've been longing to try and capture a lightning strike ever since I got my camera in February, so when the fireworks started last night I was ready.

This was taken at f3.5 for 1/30 sec., ISO 100, manual focus set to 'infinity'. I used the 'Burst 3' mode which captures 3 shots in rapid (?) succession. Very minor airbrushing to remove the most obvious water droplets on the lens.

If anyone has advice about taking pictures of lightning I'd love to hear it. This shot turned out to be a lucky one because for all the snapping I did I got less than ten even halfway decent pictures...or maybe luck is worth as much as anything. The other shots were a bit muddier looking because it had started raining; this was taken before the rain actually started.

You can check out my Storm Warning gallery to see the rest of the shots, series DSC09917-DSC00393

i dont think that this photo was luck at all. you are amazing. a true inspiration. you lugged it out in the rain, risked life and limb, and camera, and got what you wanted. nothing lucky about that.

I am so envious... this is an amazing photo. I have always wanted to catch lightning but never have attempted it (in part because I feared ruining the camera). Your shot tells me that I really should give it a shot -- this is great.

Nice shot, when I was young I could spend hours driving behind thunderstorms with my camera to do such shots.
DeMorcan13-Jun-2004 04:30
You did get it and very well at that. Congrats on your first lightning shots.

Excellent and really beautiful work. You should be very proud.

Utterly beautiful - lightning shots continue to be my favorite photos.

Another method that some use is to set the camera for a 30 second exposure to capture multiple lightning strikes - a lot easier than hoping you nailed it with a 3 fps burst. However, you did nail it with the burst shots, so congrats!!
