May 23d: Third Decade – 1958 to 1967
Now I’m getting really nostalgic. This is the period when I graduated from Colorado College and went out into the world. You know they say most people don’t find their career until their thirties, well that was certainly true of me. During this time I had five different full-time “jobs” and seven unique part-time positions!
The summer endeavors included much diversity --- materials tester and transportation study coordinator for the Colorado State Highway Department, selling quinela tickets at the local dog track and admissions passes to tourists at Seven Falls, and working as a resident advisor in a graduate school dorm.
Full time involvements included two years at Fort Bragg, N.C. as an Assistant Adjutant General officer, two years teaching American and World history in high school back in Colorado Springs, two years in graduate school at the University of Colorado (first in law school then changing to a M.A. in History), and then finally moving to Mount Vernon, Iowa to begin my career as a College student personnel dean.
John Kennedy was the President who captured me and the County in such a powerful and emotional way. His death in 1963 echoed through my life for years afterwards.
Female interests varied, however sweet, sweet Linda, the girl with the pepsodent smile was my first lover.
The University of Colorado and Colorado State flags are self-evident. I am a native of Colorado Springs, and except for my Army stint in the south I lived my entire life at the foot of Pikes Peak or in Denver or Boulder.
I loved all these different places and jobs and experiences. Life unfolded for me in exciting ways along different diagonals (thus the chess bishop). I was growing up, getting my feet on the ground, trying to figure out who I was, and having one helluva good time.
