1600m descent later, and the route emerges in a new world on a sunny, balmy day. The alpine trees of the upper Marsyangdi valley have been replaced by poplars and delicious autumnal leaves, swirling in the wind and glowing in the sun. Everyone is in celebratory mood - but few make it past 8pm.
