Cruise by Mike Livorsi

At Sea - Carnival Conquest

This photo was taken two days before someone jumped overboard. You can read about the incident here:

http://www.wtok.com/news/headlines/330081.html

And, the body was eventually found:

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/05/14/Worldandnation/First_charges_filed_i.shtml

The photo was shot on the starboard side (the side the guy did jump from) on deck 9. I'm not sure if his actual cabin (deck 10) is visible in this photo. It is believed that he hit one of the lifeboats on his way down.

I disagree about having a figure in it: this is an abstract architectural shot, and I think that's why it works so very well.

I second Claudio's comment about the reflection acting as an "optical illusion", merging ship and sea. For me the "icing on the cake" would be to have a figure in the foreground to provide perspective and draw the eye - standing at the rail of one of those balconies maybe. A thought provoking image.

Claudio,

You are correct, the story has nothing to do with the image. When I saw the topic, I remembered this picture. Then, when I looked at the picture, I was reminded that there was a tragedy that occured on that cruise.

What is interesting about it is the angle at which this is shot from. No, I didn't hang over the railing to take this picture. The Carnival Conquest (and probably its sister ships) is the only one I've been on that has passenger access above the bridge overhang. On most cruise ships, a shot like this would be impossible.

Very very intriguing, almost unreal effect. The lines and the reflections trick my eyes to believe I am looking at long rectangular enclosures filled with water and, as any good optical illision, I keep switching back and forth between the different interpretations. Good picture (but the story does not really match the visual here)

Well, whatever happened . . . this is a very intriguing image. Amazing. I had to look at it a while before my mind and my eyes could be in agreement. Very nice!
