Faulkner

There is a bin in my office where the "Charlie Rose" people discard books. It's usually unedited proofs that hopefull writers send his staff in anticipation of an interview. I check the bin every once in a while to see what treasures await me. That's how I got a hold of "I know this much is True" by Wally Lamb.
Today this beat up paperpack copy of this classic was starring back at me. Was Faulker calling out from his grave? I wonder. I never read any of his work. Always wanted to but never knew where to start. I am intimidated by his work, especially after a writing teacher of mine had once told me that one of Faulkner's chapter in a book is a sentence long. One period. Phew. I don't remember the title of the book but I was in awe by the fact that he did that on purpose and got away with it.
I hear that The Sound and The Fury" book is depressing. Can anyone give me any details, background, opinions, anything on this book?
You think it's good Cruising reading material? Well it would sure make for good conversations of the deck of a certain Carnival ship in a couple of days. No?

Nah.. Fun short stories for a cruise, something easy to pick up and put down. (besides, DO you REALLY want a book called The Sound and the Fury on an OCEAN voyage.. come on now..) Sounds like a fun trip tho. ;D (hmm.. what mischief could Dolly get into there.. I wonder...

I read it and thought a neat project would be to put it in chronological order and see if I understood it then. LOL. May I suggest "The Grapes of Wrath." Still deep, depressing and intellectual, but much easier to grasp. Or "The Name of the Rose," thought-provoking and entertaining, dark too. Or just to spook your poolside friends, "The Perfect Storm." :)
