opossum

Didelphis virginiana
opossums, the only North American marsupial, are usually very shy nocturnal creatures
we had some fearsome rains in Houston & during a break in the torrents this am, I saw this small, drenched creature ambling through a flower bed ...I ran & got my camera with my new 135 f2 DC mounted ...as quickly as I could I snuck up on the beast, who had made it behind a pecan tree
I always thought they were slow creatures, but this critter was high tailing it when he saw me approach & scampered off into some thick bouganvilla, much too dense & thorny for me to pursue ...I set the camera up on A mode & really should have used a faster shutter speed, but I had little time ...the rains picked up & I didn't want to risk the S2's electronics
don't know that I will every see a opussum again this close up in daylight
