My father rode a mule, but I remember going to a store like this for beans and rice, or dry goods, and watching customers cranking the pump and the gas would bubble up into the top of the pump till it was full and then it would run into a container till it dropped to the gallon amount the person wanted to buy. Most often it was 1 gallon at a time.
