Yep, it’s been one of those days….you know the ones, when everything goes wrong. I’m an eternal optimist. I see the good in everything and everybody yet there are some things that no matter how bad they are and no matter how hard I try just seem to be awful facts of life.
Today we’ve been to see Spurs vs Chelsea. Spurs have only beaten Chelsea once in the last 14 years – a wonderful but fluky victory in the FA Cup the season before last when we beat them 5-1 after their star striker was sent off by the referee for something he didn’t do. The foul was committed by another player yet Hasselbaink was punished for it and even though I love my Spurs I still see that without the sending off the game might have gone an entirely different way.
The last time we beat Chelsea in the league was in 1990 at Stamford Bridge when we won 0-1. The last time we beat them in the league at the Lane was in 1987. They really do have the right to call our ground 3-points lane, unlike many other clubs who try to claim that accolade.
Today dawned to sunshine (however short-lived) and I'd planned my day meticulously. I’d booked us a taxi so neither of us needed to worry about having a few beers in the Bell and Hare. It didn’t turn up so we ended up tearing across to Farnborough Station in our own car so my best-laid plans were spoiled straight away. David was very chivalrous and ended up on the Coke. Bless him.
We just managed to catch our train and got into London without further mishap.
The Bell and Hare was heaving with people excited about the game. All our mates were there and we were having a good time. A couple of my pals from work came along too and managed to get in despite being Chelsea fans. The Bell and Hare has a ‘home supporters only’ rule and generally we support that so we stay safe.
Spurs played well and had lots of chances. We had three strikers on the pitch for the whole of the second half after going down a goal towards the end of the first half yet we still couldn’t equalise. Nothing we did worked yet we felt all along that we deserved a point from the game.
It’s a weird thing though – by us losing and giving Chelsea the three points that means we score a victory anyway – we get Chelsea three points closer to ARSEnal and therefore make their near-certain winning of the Premiership title a little less near-certain and EVERY Spurs fan hopes to make Chelsea the winners rather than ARSEnal. So you could say it was a good result for us. See, ever the optimist.
When Sarah emailed me to tell me that she couldn’t go to the game and David could go in her place, David was really thrilled but he said he couldn’t get the Elvis Costello song ‘I don’t want to go to Chelsea’ out of his head. This is what inspired this photo.
So, here is a bit of it…..
‘I don’t want to check your pulse, I don’t want nobody else, I don’t want to go to Chelsea’
