I found this large female beneath a log in north Queensland and it was only after I got the pictures on my computer screen that
I realised I was looking at the gory aftermath of what might have been a recent mating- or a territorial dispute. But there is one
very dead and dismembered male spider in the right of the frame, identified by the distinctive club shaped terminal palps which
can still be seen toward the top right corner. Mygalomorphs are regarded as having primitive features and include the largest,
and some of the most venomous spiders in the world. The most famous in Australia is the Sydney Funnelweb, whose strongly
neurotoxic venom can kill people (but not dogs and cats, apparently)..
