Killdeer

Oakdale Twp., Noble Co., Okla.

A year-round resident, the Killdeer (Charadius vociferus) is a common sight in rural Oklahoma. It nests in open areas, usually in slight depressions in pastures and along roadsides. When nesting, it will attempt to distract intruders by doing what is known as a "broken wing" dance. Its name comes from the distinctive call "didideeerr".
