For once, I was finally close enough to birds to get some good shots, almost too close! This big bruiser was very cooperative, the only problem being getting a clear shot through the surrounding birds. The bill on this bird is interesting, as the right side is extensively pale, with the lower mandible being almost completely pale. The pale area on the left side isn't as extensive. This is more paleness than I was expecting for a 1st-winter (bill typically remains largely black at this age, pale only at base) but the plumage seems to be good for 1st-winter, such as the greater coverts which are still strongly barred.
