The Cat Street Coffee shop was our regular hang out. See and Be Seen. I especially it's men's room by the side on the stair leading to the second floor ...

I "lived" in the Hong Kong Hilton in the early 70's. We went there twice for short trips before we moved to HK in 1975. We lived in the hotel for 4 months before we moved to Repulse Bay.
I loved that hotel. Tanaka, the maitre-d of The Grill was always charming. My dad had been there so many times for business trips that they made a monogrammed napkin ring for him. He still has it.
Tommy, the somalier, was sweet. I think I had a crush on him. And the band...I can't recall their name. They were Philipino, I think. I recall having a crush on one of the members as well.
I loved that hotel. I was sorry to hear it was torn down. When my brother and his wife went back to Hong Kong in 1996, she almost booked them in the hotel. Thank goodness they changed hotels before they left or else they'd have found themselves looking at rubble. According to him that was all that was left when he got there.
I finally made it back in 2009. What changes to HK! Amazing. Even though I was 9 years-old when I left, I remembered so much, including the exact spot the Hilton had stood. You can't miss that rounded curb. Wow.
So sorry to see it gone.

I worked in the room service for couple years before I came to the states. I still remember the 'Eagle's Nest' night club on the top floor and the 'Den' disco in the basement. A lot of memories.
he was a formidable figure, with scare tactics like that who would have dared to enter just to use the loo?? especially if you are 12 or 13 years old.... go to the mandarin instead!

when I was a little kid, my mom used to say to me every time we walked by the hotel entrance (we lived in Wanchai then), 'see that big, bearded & turbaned Sikh security man with a vicious dagger? he'll come & take you away at night if you don't behave!'. Racist, derogatory & totally unacceptable way to teach a kid but I guess it must have worked. I remember that I would cry & beg her not to let him come near me. Well it brought tears back to my eyes when I first looked at this pic - Hilton is gone forever! ... by the way, I think he did quite well financially (tips from hotel guests), I seem to recall reading in the paper that ICAC was after him for tax evasions when they tore the hotel down.
