Gate, Willemstad, Curacao, 2003

All of the primary colors – red, yellow, and blue – are present on this boldly painted gate before a beautifully restored house on one of the Caribbean’s most prosperous islands. The light is as bold as the color – the interplay of light and shadow enriches the color with a three dimensional effect. Just as the peeling primary colors in the previous image symbolized the fury of nature, the perfect condition of these sleek colors tell us that whoever lives here appreciates beauty and has the means to maintain it. All of which provides a good metaphor for Willemstad itself.

If I was to give a workshop on using color as expression, I would love to hold it in Willemstad. Visual feast is a perfect phrase for this place. Thanks, Jude, for pointing out not just the effect of the colors themselves, but talking of the combinations. It is the interaction of color, light temperature, and shadow play that makes this image so expressive. It is a metaphor for life at its most vital.

I knew as soon as I saw the thumb that this was Curacao! I was amazed at the intensity of colours there, highlighted by the Caribbeans sunlight, and also by the bold combinations in some instances. This image is a visual feast - a wonderful combination of shapes and shadows, but the colours increase that delight by defining the individual elelments further.
