This picture was taken in 1964 at my house in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn, NY at one of our family dinner parties. My nephew Kenny was 15 and my daughter Mel was 4 at the time. At that age, my daughter was probably a way better chess player than I was, even though it looked like I knew what was going on!
The gentleman on the right was Professor Joseph Steinberg, my boss at what used to be called New York Community College. A graduate of the Cooper Union, he headed the civil engineering department at NYCC in the 1950's up until his death around 1970.
Professor Steinberg and his wife Evelyn were regular visitors to our home when my children were little. They were usually the only non-Chinese people at our dinners. They were the loveliest people ... I even asked them to be godparents to my daughter. They would be over 100 years old if they were still living. Our family still misses them.
