This railroad was originally the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific's "Golden State Route" running from Kansas City to Tucumcari, New Mexico. After the Rock Island's bankruptcy, the line was acquired by the Southern Pacific and eventually, through merger, became property of the Union Pacific Railroad. Between Pratt, Kansas, and Tucumcari, the railroad runs parallel with Highway 54.
