Moose were re-introduced to Cape Breton around 1947 after over-hunting practically wiped them out.

This female moose was photographed on French Mountain. Her baby is hiding just behind the trees. These imposing animals can weigh up to 600 kilograms. Due to over hunting, moose were practically wiped out in Cape Breton in the early 1900s. In 1947-1948, 18 moose were imported from Elk Island National Park in Alberta and released on the eastern side of Cape Breton Highlands. Today, they number in the thousands and their numbers are monitored carefully. A similar attempt to restore the caribou population was not as successful.
