Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 #3985 in a reverse movement for the start of a photo run-by on track two west of Hermosa. The smoke seen at the end of the train is from a grass fire set by flying cinders from the coal fired Challenger. The locomotive has since been converted to oil firing for safety and convenience.
This was the first of three trips I've made riding behind #3985. In 1992, I was fortunate enough to be a volunteer worker aboard a two-day excrusion pulled by the huge locomotive across Oklahoma on former Missouri Pacific and Missouri-Kansas-Texas trackage.
