Temple inside El Castillo--chac mool & Jaguar

Inside the door on the side of the steps to El Castillo is a VERY narrow
passageway that leads to an earlier temple.

El Castillo was built over this older
structure. The Maya did such "overbuilding", possibly in dedication to an important ruler who had died or in display of a ruling conquest.

The chacmool statue stood on the front terrace; just inside the temple, a red jaguar sculpture stands...
