The Heptapyrgion

Thessaloniki, Greece

The image shows the Heptapyrgion (also known as Eptapyrgio) and the old town (Ano Poli) in Thessaloniki, Greece. While Heptapyrgion translates to "fortress of the seven towers," the historic castle actually features ten towers built across the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. Built during the Byzantine era (with major parts dating to the 12th century), it later served as an Ottoman garrison and-from the late 19th century until 1989-as a notorious prison

So neat how it sits so majestically above the town.

that is a sober symbol of power atop such a colourful looking residential area..

I wonder what the ancient builders would think of satellite receivers on the roof. A beautiful view of this incredible part of history. V
