Monastery of St. Nicholas of Badovas

Meteora, Greece

Also called the Monastery of St. Nicholas of Mpantovas, it was built around 1,400 AD in a rock cave at Badovas, which is the name of the rock it is built into. I'm assuming this is what came after open caves (see https://pbase.com/dlgphoto/image/176648213 ) but before the rock-top monasteries.

I cannot imagine how difficult it was for the builders to create this monastery. I am totally astonished. V.
