The first miraculous image, the enthroned Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven with the Christ Child, was already venerated around 1600 and stood protected in a wayside shrine at the site of today's Angerer Chapel, along the footpath to the pilgrimage church. A votive painting from 1626 depicts this small, popular monument with the nearby Frauenbründl spring. Placed in a small wooden chapel at the site of the present pilgrimage church, the number of pilgrims steadily increased. Consequently, the chapel was replaced by a larger stone structure, resulting in the present-day Church of Maria Gern in 1708. The Baroque Church of Maria Gern finds its strongest expression in its architecture. Flowing, concave, and convex forms, domes, groups of columns, gables, and window pediments with rich ornamental decoration evoke a sense of power and movement in the viewer, amplifying all its effects.
