Berchtesgaden Royal Palace, together with the collegiate church, forms an imposing ensemble and remains the residential palace and summer residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty to this day. Who could blame Franz, Duke of Bavaria, for choosing this location right in the heart of Berchtesgaden!
Berchtesgaden Castle, the summer residence of the Wittelsbachs after 1810, was formerly the center of a small ecclesiastical state. The Augustinian Canons Regular monastery, founded around 1102/1105, subsequently gained imperial immediacy with the granting of high justice (1294) and the status of a prince-provostry in 1559.
