Church Of San Francesco d'Assisi In Matera And Tree Of Life

Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy

The Catholic Church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Matera is located in the central square that bears his name, in the heart of the city of Matera.

The Church, which has undergone numerous modifications over the centuries, has a Baroque-style façade and an interior with a single nave with several side chapels.
Its imposing facade, in Rococo style from 1751, has large windows full of friezes.
The center features a prominent stone statue of the Immaculate Madonna.
The Madonna is flanked by statues of Saint Francis of Assisi on the left and Saint Anthony of Padua.

The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi is also an important example of religious architecture in the city of Matera, UNESCO World Heritage site, and part of Rupestrian Churches of Matera.
There are up to 166 churches called rupestri because carved into the rock.

The TREE OF LIFE is a famous bronze sculpture by an Italian sculptor Andrea Roggi, located near the church of Saint Francesco d'Assisi.
The sculpture depicts an olive tree growing from a globe, symbolizing strength, peace and the interconnectedness of nature and humanity.
