69_St Kevin's Church.jpg

Built in the 12th century, St. Kevin's Church is nicknamed St. Kevin's Kitchen, for it features a steep stone roof and a miniature round tower/belfry that resembles a chimney.
The small stone structure on the right is the Sacristy, which was used to store vestments and church vessels.
Thanks to its roof constructed entirely out of solid stone rather than wood, it survived all the arsons in the English military raids.
The true end for the monks came in the 1530s and 1540s during the Protestant Reformation under King Henry VIII.
The English Crown officially banned Catholic monastic orders, seized all church lands, and actively forced the remaining monks out of their sanctuaries.
Some monks officially renounced their vows to blend into the secular population, some quietly hid in the local villages. Some fled to mainland Europe.
However, Glendalough Monastic Site never lost its spiritual legacy—it transformed into one of Ireland's most famous historic places of pilgrimage.
It draws thousands of visitors to the valley every June 3rd to celebrate St. Kevin's Day.

A lovely capture of St. Kevin’s Church, with its weathered stone walls, steep roof and charming round belfry standing against a blue, cloud-filled sky. The small sacristy adds character, while the lush green hills provide a peaceful backdrop. The richly textured stonework gives the scene a quiet sense of timelessness — a beautiful closing image for your Ireland gallery. Thank you for sharing this memorable journey...wonderful image..V

Amazing construction of this impressive church built in the 12th century.
It will last many more years it was built to last.
Information excellent.

Looking at the stone built small Church someone immediately realises the antiquity of the construction. And how difficult it is in our time to find not in ruin such a Church. This is a special Church, St Kevin's, and an exquisite picture. Thanks for documenting and sharing. Congratulations for the well researched notes. VVVVV+++

A lovely little church with thick, sturdy walls that has withstood the test of time and incursions by the English army. The interior must be dark, as the openings are few and narrow. A fine shot. V
