Church Of San Francesco d'Assisi In Matera

Matera, Basilicata, Southern Italy

The Catholic Church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Matera is located in the central square that bears his name, in the heart of the city of Matera.
Its origin dates back to a small underground church carved into the rock, visible through a trap door in the chapel, which houses a fresco of Pope Urban II, dating back to 1093.
The Church, which has undergone numerous modifications over the centuries, has a Baroque-style façade and an interior with a single nave with several side chapels.
The nave is adorned with mid-18th-century Baroque stucco work (1756).

Behind the high altar stands the 17th century choir, enriched with nine panels of Venetian art.
They make up the beautiful polyptych attributed to Lazzaro Bastiani, painted in 1470.
The images represent a Madonna and Child in the middle ant saints:
St, Francis of Assisi, St. Paul, St. Peter, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Louis of Toulouse, St. Bernard of Siena and St. Catherineof Alessandria.

Above, there is the pipe organ built by Fratelli Ruffatti (Ruffatti Brothers) in 1955 and modified by them in 1978, with electric transmission and with 22 registers on two manuals and pedal.
