Wien. Karlskirche

Karlskirche is often described as one of the most beautiful baroque churches north of the Alps. The church was commissioned by Emperor Charles VI after a devastating plague epidemic and construction began in 1716. The building was finally completed in 1737, and today it stands as one of the architectural masterpieces of Vienna. The impressive dome, the large reflecting pool in front of the church, and the two monumental columns inspired by Trajan’s Column in Rome make Karlskirche a truly unique sight. Most travel guides consider Karlskirche one of the absolute “must-see” attractions during a stay in Vienna.Inside the church you will find beautiful frescoes, an impressive dome, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels quite different from the busy Karlsplatz outside. Visitors can even take an elevator up to a viewing platform inside the dome to admire the ceiling paintings up close.
