October 31, 1991, Donald Trump’s 79-year-old mother, Mary, was shopping at a mall in Queens when a 16-year-old mugger knocked her down and grabbed her pocketbook. Inside were exactly $14 along with her personal papers.
Mary Trump suffered serious facial cuts, fractured ribs, and a possible broken hip, and she had to be hospitalized because of her injuries.
A Wonder Bread truck driver named Lawrence Herbert witnessed what happened. He chased the suspect through an underground apartment passageway and managed to hold him until police arrived.
The teenager, Paul LoCasto, was charged with robbery and assault. In July 1992, he was sentenced to three to nine years in prison.
Donald Trump was deeply touched by Herbert’s courage. He personally invited the delivery driver to the Plaza Hotel, where he wined, dined, and rewarded him with a check, although the exact amount was never publicly revealed.
The incident showed that even the mother of a billionaire could become a victim of street crime — and Donald Trump never forgot the ordinary man who stepped forward and helped when it mattered most.
