Finya Library in Gravina In Puglia

Gravina In Puglia, Apulia, Southern Italy

The Biblioteca Capitolare Finia (also called Finya Library in Gravina in Puglia is one of the oldest public libraries in the region of Puglia.
It was founded in 1686 by Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini, Who ascended to the papal throne in 1724 with the name of Benedict XIII.
In this founding act he acted as executor of the last will of the Bishop of Gravina, Domenico Cennini who wanted to help local priests improve their education.
In 1743 the building construction was ended under project and supervision of architect Donato Giannuzzi from Altamura.
It was enlarged in the 18th century by the personal collection of Cardinal Francesco Antonio Finy, a close collaborator of Pope Benedict XIII.

The Finia Capitular Library features a prominent 17th century mechanical clock located on the building's pediment, within a bell aedicule.
In later modification, it had portraits of Italian unification leaders Vittorio Emanuele II and Giuseppe Garibaldi added to its detail.
