The two ducks with clean, solid, and sharp yellow bills could be males, as they lose their colorful plumage (called in eclipse) at the end of the breeding season and look like females. However, females can always be identified by their bills, which consistently display numerous black or dark brown spots—or even irregular mottling (how unfair!). If the group consists entirely of females, they are unlikely to be swimming in formation, unless they are in a rush to pick up their ducklings from school. Haha.
