Cathedral In Gravina In Puglia

Gravina In Puglia, Apulia, Southern Italy

Altar of Saint Michael was commissioned in 1690, by the bishop M. Cavalieri.
It has a niche decorated with frescoes, inside there is a statue of San Michele Arcangelo.
The Saint and the dragon form a single block. The author is Stefano da Puyignano, a local sixteenth-century artist.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta – built by the Normans in 11th-12th centuries - is one of the most important monuments of Gravina.
Destroyed by fires and earthquakes in the mid-15th century, it was refurbished in Renessaince - Romanesque style.
It houses a splendid reliquary of an arm of the English saint Thomas Becket (1119-1170).
In August 1993 Pope John Paul II granted Gravina Cathedral the status of a minor basilica.
