A group of women at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women displayed this quilt at the 1995 Kentucky State Fair depicting their stories of domestic abuse. Below the heart and weeping eye in the center panel are the names and prison sentences of the quilters. Upon seeing the quilt at the fair, Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones was moved to work toward commuting the women’s sentences, which he succeeded in doing.
The story of the quilt includes the warning: “This artwork contains depictions of graphic violence, physical abuse, and sexual assault.”
