Red velvet mite (Trombidiidae)

Larose Forest

This small (about 4mm) mite is feeding on the eggs of the Galerucella beetle. The beetles were introduced some time ago to control Purple Loosestrife, so these eggs are on a purple loosestrife plant. Mites are completely harmless to humans and do not destroy plants. They feed on insect eggs.

So the beetle is for control of the Loosestrife, but the mite is eating the beetle eggs. This isn't a good mite.
