B-17G Oil Painting

This is an oil painting I did a number of years ago for my dad before his death. He was stationed at Knettishall Air Base in Suffolk, England during the later half of World War ll as a B-17 pilot. This painting hung in my dad's office until he retired at which time my dad brought it home to my parent's house. My dad passed away over 12 years ago and with the recent death of my mother I brought this painting home with me. This is an oil painting sized 24" x 16" on a coated masonite panel and will be passed on to one of my children at some point in the future. I decided to put this painting on pbase.com to honor my dad and the many brave airmen who served during World War ll. I recently read that 12,731 B-17 bombers were lost and an estimated 60,000 B-17 airmen were killed in World War ll during combat missions and fatal training accidents. A steep price that should not be forgotten.

A wonderful and quite precious painting. The U.S. Army Air Force Bomber crews in the 8th Air Force in Europe faced high combat losses, some groups exceeding a 50% mortality rate.

What a deeply moving and heartfelt tribute, Dave. This beautiful oil painting created for your dad. It honors not only him but all the brave airmen who flew those missions, and the staggering sacrifices they made. Passing it on to the next generation keeps their memory alive in the most personal way. Truly a powerful statement and a meaningful work of art. BV

What a striking and meaningful oil painting you created. The clouds look so real, and each cloud seems to be embedded with a praise to the airmen's bravery and a wish for their safety. Great work of art, Dave ! ~VVVVV+++~

superb work..there is a sense of romance at work here, although the number of fatalities suggests a sobering side to the tale..

What a wonderful piece of art you created for your dad. Very important to keep this in your family and remember to history behind it. Someday it will hang in your grand children’s home and they will keep the history behind it alive. Thanks for sharing. V

I am glad that we get to see this! I commend you for your skills as always!
I feel it is very important to have the other two planes in the distance for ity tells a larger story.
I respect and honer your fathers service and sacrifices as well of all of our veterans.
Thank you for this.
