The Benedictine Abbey In Montescaglioso

Montescaglioso, Basilicata, Southern Italy

The Abbey of San Michele in Montescaglioso features on the wall coats of arms representing both the town and the monastic order.
The Montescaglioso coat of arms features clasic blue shield (d'azzurro) displaying three aligned hills.
From these hills sprout three golden wheat stalks. It is topped with a golden crown.
The hills represent the harsh, rocky terrain of the Murgia region.
The wheat spikes symbolize agricultural life and the historical challenge of cultivating the land.
