The seated figure represents the American feminist poet Alice Notley. George Segal wrapped Alice Notley in medical plaster casts from Johnson ＆ Johnson. Once the plaster was dry, he carefully cut open the mold and reassembled the empty, rough plaster ＇shell＇.
