Another historical fire call box in downtown DC, this one commemorating the fact that Rhodes Tavern, built in 1799 and Washington’s first “Town Hall,” was spared the torch during the British burning of Washington in 1814. Despite a ballot initiative approved by citizens to preserve the building in 1983, the city razed the landmark in 1984.
