Trulli Of Alberobello

Alberobello, Puglia, Italy

Trullo Casa Lippolis is one of the largest in Alberobello.
It consists of 15 connected huts with a spacious courtyard.
The name of the complex derives from the name Vitonofrion Lippolis, who was the first archpriest of the Church in Alberobello.
He built this house in the 18th century.
Now it houses the museum dedicated to the history, architecture and culture of the area and the city of Alberobello, founded in 17th century.

Known for their exceptional shapes, trulli are old constructions characterized by circular plans, strictly white dry stone walls, small windows and conical roofs.
The Trulli of Alberobello is the whole urban area of Valle d'Itria near Bari, with the number around 1500 of the houses, and many are still functional and serving as hotels, restaurants and shops.
The Trulli of Alberobello have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, thanks to the unique architectural and historical value of trulli houses.
They are considered one of the best examples of vernacular architecture in Europe.
Alberobello is the only inhabited center with an entire district of trulli, and is considered to be the cultural capital of the trulli of the Itria Valley.
It is one of the most beautiful small towns of Italy.
Having to use only stones, the peasants found in the round form with self-supporting domed roof the simplest configuration.
The roofs were often embellished with decorative pinnacles representing the signature of the architect (master trullaro).
This obligation to have houses built with dry stones was an expedient of the count to avoid paying taxes to the Spanish viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples.
