The "aerial limousine" for four passengers was part of the initial fleet of Lufthansa, which was founded in 1926.
The more than 300 F13s built were easy to maintain and—equipped with snow skis or floats—flew in even the most remote parts of the world.

The story of the Deutsches Museum’s F 13 is an adventurous one:
during a visit to Germany in 1928, King Amanullah of Afghanistan toured the Junkers aircraft factory in Dessau
—he wanted to modernize his country and establish an air transport network in Afghanistan, just as had been done in neighboring Persia.
To this end, he purchased two F 13 aircraft; the two planes, named "Wachtelkönig" (Corncrake) and "Nymphensittich" (Cockatiel),
were flown to Afghanistan on April 2, 1928.
