The statue of St. Peter.
Created in the late 18th/early 19th century, this splendid statue is a true historical jewel of the renowned Lecce papier-mâché school.
The master craftsmen of the time fashioned this sculpture to combine two fundamental needs: to create a work rich in detail, majestic and solemn, yet incredibly light.
The weight was important, as the statue has to be carried by men during the street procession.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the church of San Francesco, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Constructed in the 12th century, the church exemplifies Romanesque architecture typical of medieval southern Italy.
The church has been a Pontifical Basilica since 1051 and served as a cathedral for several centuries.
Inside, we can see several old paintings and sculptures.
