The statues ot the Saints Cosmas and Damian in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Chiesa Madre).
The twin brothers Cosmas and Damian were born in the Arabian Peninsula in the 3rd century AD, and lived in Asia Minor (now the teritory of Turkey).
They were called saints without money, because they practiced medicine and treated all people, poor or rich, without a fee.
They preached the Christian faith and suffered martyrdom in Syria.
They are venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the church of San Francesco, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Constructed in the 12th century, the church exemplifies Romanesque architecture typical of medieval southern Italy.
The church has been a Pontifical Basilica since 1051 and served as a cathedral for several centuries.
Inside, we can see several old paintings and sculptures.
