Miglionico - Basilica Of Santa Maria Maggiore

Miglionico, Basilicata, Southern Italy

HIC IACET CORPUS S. THEODORI MART. - here lies the body relics of Saint Theodore the Martyr.
The Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates (meaning "The General"), (281-319) was a brave warrior in the Roman army, who suffered for Christ in Heraklea on Feb. 8th, 319.
He is the saint in the Easter Orthodox, Catholic and Oriental Orthodox Churches.
His remains rest in a glass-fronted reliquary under the altar. The saint's body is dressed in Roman armor, resting as if asleep.
He holds the palm of martyrdom in his left hand.

The relic collection is notable for including one of his teeth, which is placed in a small metal box on the saint's foot.
There is the Latin insription on it: "EX DENTIBUS MOLARIS S. THEODORI.
Traditionally, locals celebrate his feast day on May 8th.

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the church of San Francesco, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Constructed in the 12th century, the church exemplifies Romanesque architecture typical of medieval southern Italy.
The church has been a Pontifical Basilica since 1051 and served as a cathedral for several centuries.
Inside, we can see several old paintings and sculptures.
