The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the church of San Francesco, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Constructed in the 12th century, the church exemplifies Romanesque architecture typical of medieval southern Italy.
The church has been a Pontifical Basilica since 1051 and served as a cathedral for several centuries.
Inside, we can see several old paintings, including one by Tintoretto from 1580, depicting the Madonna Assumed into Heaven.
