The Drentsche Hoofdvaart, dug between 1769 and 1980, connects the cities of Assen and Meppel in the province of Drenthe. The canal is approximately 45 km long, features 25 bridges, and served for many decades as a busy transport route for peat. Today, the canal is primarily a popular and scenic route for pleasure boating.
