We cross the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge, a drawbridge connecting Maryland and Virginia, quite frequently but have never been able to see it raised since those openings always take place at 1 a.m. But I received an alert from DC Police that on Sunday, June 7, it would be raised at 1 p.m. for the passage of the Kalmar Nyckel tall ship, a full-scale reproduction of the 1638 ship that brought Swedish settlers to Delaware. I thought for sure the police had made a mistake with the time, but we headed to Alexandria anyway in the hope of finally seeing the drawbridge in action. Luckily, we were not disappointed!
