In the middle of a great forest, a fire broke out.
The flames grew quickly, devouring everything in their path.
The animals, frightened, fled without looking back. Everyone escaped.
Everyone except a small hummingbird. The hummingbird flew
to the river, picked up a drop of water with its beak,
and returned to the fire to let it fall on the flames. Again and again,
Hummingbird flew with a drop of water. The other animals
watched in disbelief. A Tiger asked, what are you doing?
Can’t you see the fire is too great?
Hummingbird, without stopping, replied: I am doing my part.
The animals fell silent. Fear transformed into reflection.
At that moment, the Great Spirit was moved by the Hummingbird and its devotion to the forest. Miraculously a strong downpour started, which put an end to the great fire.
(There are multiple versions of the latter Native American Tale.)
