Legend has it that the city was founded by Menestheus , the eleventh king of Athens, who, according to the Iliad, commanded the Athenian troops in the Trojan War. After the conflict, during which his throne was usurped, he left Troy with his crew, wandering aimlessly until they reached the mouth of the Crisus River (Guadalete), where, captivated by the landscape and climate, he founded the Port of Menestheus.
